Indian IT industry has seen many ups and down. After technologically advanced nations denied supply of supercomputer to India in mid-1980s, Center for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) was set up in 1987. Indian Super computer, PARAM series has shown some strength but does it stands along with world's leading Supercomputers? A big NO. India's top supercomputer at present ranks 58th globally in terms of computing speed.

If our ministers are to be believed, we can get a highly efficient and faster supercomputer by 2017. This will be world's fastest supercomputer. It will leave behind IBM's Sequoia. If the Indian government approves building exaflop supercomputers, these will be at least 61 times faster than Sequoia, officials said.

Telecom and IT Minister Kapil Sibal is understood to have written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh sharing the roadmap to develop "petaflop and exaflop range of supercomputers" at an estimated cost of Rs 4,700 crore over 5 years.
"In his (Sibal) letter, he has said that C-DAC has developed a proposal with a roadmap to develop a petaflop and exaflop range of supercomputers in the country with an outlay of Rs 4,700 crore," a government official said.

The promised supercomputer will give India a sharp lead in information technology world. Various data projects, Indian meteorological department ( IMD) will be most benefited. Monsoon prediction, drought prediction is going to get a boost.  A supercomputer also helps design customised drugs for individuals as per the characterisation of the person's medical fitness as well as space research, bioinformatics among others.Supercomputers are also used to build large concrete structures such as flyovers, bridges and high-rise buildings.

But a big question arises- After such a sheer failure of ambitious AAKASH tablet project, are we going to get as promised ? A year back, Indian students' dream of getting a cheap and effective tablet was crushed. Aakash, which was set to become the most ambitious project of Indian government never took a flight.

In a country where political flip flop plays a major role in success of a project, can we imagine success when we are still struggling for political stability. Most of the government's plan are still pending and doing rounds of tables. We needs grain godowns But few success shows a little hope.

If present scenario is to be believed, India stood far behind its technology rivals. China has 2 supercomputers in the top ten list for 2012. Tianhe — 1A at the National Supercomputing Center in Tianjin was the world’s fastest super computer in 2010. The other Chinese computer in the 2012 list is Nebulae at the National Supercomputing Centre in Shenzhen which is at number 10. IBM has succeeded in listing it's SEQUOIA as
world's fastest supercomputer.  India's top supercomputer at present ranks 58th globally in terms of computing speed.

We are not disheartening the project but as far as records says everyone has crossed their fingers till 2017. We are still waiting the highly anticipated Indian Defence TEJAS fighter planes for decades.
Its certain that the arch rivals must be tightening their noose for competition after Indian ambition has gone viral. Are we going to withstand the competition or some other project will win the "61 times faster than IBM's SEQUOIA " competition, is a big question. After all 5 year is a long gap.

We are certainly going to add another feather to our cap.
