Earth Day was founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in first held on April 22, 1970.Nelson had conceived the idea for Earth Day following a trip he took to Santa Barbara right after the horrific oil spill off the coast in 1969. Outraged by the devastation and Washington political inertia, Nelson proposed a national teach-in on the environment to be observed by every university campus in the U.S.

The first Earth Day celebration was held in 1970 and it inaugrated the modern  environmental movement with over 20 million Americans from all walks of life.

This year’s theme is “A Billion Acts of Green” and the goal is to generate a billion acts of environmental service and advocacy before the global Earth Summit 2012 in Rio.
The Earth Day campaign aims to combat climate change by driving substantive behavioral change and channel quantifiable action on behalf of the environment.

Treat the earth how you want the earth to treat you
