During last year labor day celebration 23 people died and countless others were injured on Pennsylvania highways. It has forced motorist off the road and fewer motorist are expected to hit the road on this year labor day celebration.
“Everyone enjoys the holiday, but we just want everyone to be safe,” Northampton police Chief Barry Pilla said.
Another factor affecting the celebration is the recent disaster caused by hurricane Irene, although Irene is believed not to play a major role as party spoiler.
As Hurricane Irene forced the closure of numerous roads, AAA spokeswoman Jenny Robinson is asking motorists to make sure their routes are open before departing.
“Most Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware tourist areas were spared and are ready for business,” Robinson said. “We recommend that travelers check to make sure that their destination is unaffected.”
Few hours before the busy Labor Day weekend, the average price of gasoline is nearly $1 higher as compared to last year's labor day weekend, according to the AAA.The average gallon of gas in the Rochester area currently costs $3.78. That is down from $3.85 last month. There is a slight decrease in automobile travelers for the holiday weekend, Shaun Seufert, public affairs specialist for the AAA of Western and Central New York, said.
