Why Amazon's will be the first successful Android tablet

The iPad can look forward to living a long and prosperous life, at least in tech terms. But today, the first report came down of someone actually seeing and using the Amazon tablet, which is actually the next Kindle, according to <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2011/09/02/amazon-kindle-tablet/">TechCrunch's MG Seigler</a>, who was not allowed to photograph the device. <br /> As <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-1001_3-20101223-92/amazons-kindle-tablet-an-android-fork-with-disruptive-pricing/">ZDNet's Larry Dignan points out</a>, the new Kindle (or Kindles--<a href="http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-19736_7-20065449-251.html">CNET also reported</a> as early as May that Amazon was working on both 7- and 10-inch tablets) is Amazon's worst-kept secret, which is why we think we know so much about it. <br /> <div class="cnet-image-div image-REGULAR float-right" style="width: 184px;"> <img alt="" class="cnet-image" height="138" src="http://i.i.com.com/cnwk.1d/i/tim/2011/09/02/newsAmazon7inchtablet.jpg" width="184" /> </div>And now that at least one human appears to have handled one of the devices, I'm suddenly feeling confident enough to make a declaration that may seem foolish given the <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-1001_3-20094222-92/hp-halts-webos-business-spins-off-pc-unit/">HP TouchPad's recent demise</a> and <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-20101064-1/touchpad-frenzy-peaks-with-random-star-wars-references/">strange life after death</a>. Here it is anyway in case you missed the headline: This new Amazon Kindle/tablet thing, if the majority of what we've heard about it is true, will be the first <a href="http://www.cnet.com/android-atlas/">Android</a> tablet to actually sell. <br /> Forrester has already said that Amazon could <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-20099144-93/amazon-could-sell-5-million-tablets-next-quarter/">sell 5 million</a> tablets next quarter, and I think that's more than just blowing smoke. Here're five reasons why: <br /> <b>Value:</b> Rumors about the price of an Amazon tablet have been consistently heading downward since the beginning of the summer. Much of this could be wishful thinking following the TouchPad fire sale, but Amazon is nothing if not shrewd about pricing and also has no fear of launching a loss leader. The $249 price point sounds about right, if not even a bit lower. Throwing in Amazon Prime for free also makes perfect sense to get customers streaming and shopping from their new device right away. Such a total package would blow all other Android offerings out of the water and give some Apple fans pause as well.<br /> <b>Whispernet:</b> This hasn't been widely reported because it isn't widely understood, but the new Amazon tablet will come with a free 3G data plan built in. Whispernet is Amazon's wireless network that up until now has been used only by 3G Kindles to keep track of your reading progress and highlighting on your eBooks via Whispersync. Whispersync would become much more dynamic on an Amazon tablet, providing on-demand data without any additional plan. Take your Amazon tablet out of the box, charge it up, turn it on, and if you're in range of a 3G signal, you're automatically online and ready to start streaming from Prime or Cloud Drive, or (Amazon hopes) to start shopping. <br /> <b>Amazon doesn't have to replace Apple:</b> For every time someone put out the extra money to buy an iMac or a Macbook, there were always a handful of other consumers just as happy to spend half as much on the latest from HP, Lenovo, Acer, or a number of others. The smartphone market is beginning to look the same with the iPhone and its competitors, and the same will eventually happen with the iPad and tablets. More economically minded consumers are just waiting for a tab that offers enough value, and Amazon has the resources to deliver.<br /> <b>The power of e-ink:</b> While the Techcrunch report says the tablet Siegler handled was backlit-only, there are <a href="http://www.informationweek.com/byte/news/radio/personal-tech/231400023">reports</a> that the other of the possible two models will be dual-mode, operating as a backlit color tablet with the option to switch to the easy-on-the-eye e-Ink mode familiar to Kindle users. This is another key differentiating factor that could push Amazon forward.<br /> <b>Brand:</b> It takes more than low price to create value, which is why the cheapo no-name Android tabs haven't taken off. Obesity can turn body fat toxic

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">Obesity can trigger inflammation in the fat cells found just below the skin, creating an environment that has been linked with the development of both diabetes and heart disease, two new studies indicate.<br /> The findings suggest that people need to worry about all types of body fat, not just the deeply embedded fat that earlier work had focused on. But the new work also hints that some face a higher risk than others.<br /> In the body, most fat clusters under the skin in what’s known as subcutaneous adipose tissue. Much of the rest, called visceral fat, accumulates within muscle and between organs deeper inside the body. For more than a decade, studies have shown that obesity triggers visceral fat to begin spewing hormonelike chemicals called cytokines. These proinflammatory chemicals have been linked with metabolic syndrome, a constellation of abnormalities that can include impaired insulin sensitivity (known as insulin resistance), fat buildup around the waist, high blood pressure and low concentrations of HDL, the good cholesterol.<br /> “There’s been this sort of ill-proven idea that subcutaneous adipose tissue is not harmful and that visceral adipose tissue is the vicious demon that makes us sick,” says Gökhan S. Hotamisligil of the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, who was not involved in the studies. The new data, he says, reinforce the fact that subcutaneous fat is far from benign.<br /> In one study, Ishwarlal Jialal of the University of California, Davis Medical Center in Sacramento and his colleagues sampled blood and subcutaneous fat from 65 men and women. Most were clinically overweight or obese, and 39 had metabolic syndrome. <br /> Subcutaneous fat from people with metabolic syndrome was rife with macrophages, a type of immune molecule that normally kills unwanted cells. But here, Jialal says, macrophages “appeared to be conspiring with fat cells to produce a host of proinflammatory cytokines,” whose levels correlated with an individual’s insulin resistance. <br /> This proinflammatory environment was absent in people without metabolic syndrome — even among people who were very obese, the researchers report in the November <em>Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism</em>, in an article posted online August 24. Although obesity predisposes people to develop metabolic syndrome, concludes Jialal, it takes more than excess fat to trigger it.<br /> A related trial, published in the July 12 <em>Journal of the American College of Cardiology</em>, probed inflammation and metabolic impairments associated with subcutaneous fat in 109 obese men and women and 17 lean individuals. Some had diabetes but none had known heart disease. <br /> “We found no inflammation in the fat of lean individuals,” who also had healthy blood vessel function, notes cardiologist Noyan Gokce of Boston University School of Medicine. In contrast, roughly 70 percent of the obese people had metabolic syndrome or at least some abnormal metabolic parameters in blood tests. These people also showed evidence of inflammation-promoting fat and impaired blood vessel function.<br /> But the big surprise, Gokce says, was that the other roughly 30 percent of the obese people had very little inflammation inside their fat, little evidence of insulin resistance and vascular function that was the same as in lean people. “So it seems that the quantity of fat may not be nearly as important as its quality.” <br /> The new data “open up the idea that maybe we should revisit subcutaneous fat as a major player in the metabolic consequences of obesity,” says Alyssa Hasty of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville.<br /> <br /> source-www.sciencenews.org </div>

China's Moon probe reaches new destination

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> Several months after departing from the moon, a Chinese spacecraft has arrived at a new destination about 930,000 miles (1.5 million kilometers) from Earth, according to news reports in China.<br /> The Chang'e 2 moon probe arrived at Lagrange Point 2 (L2) — a place where the gravity of Earth and the sun roughly balance out — on Aug. 25, the <a href="http://news.xinhuanet.com/english2010/sci/2011-08/30/c_131084003.htm">Xinhua news service reported</a> Tuesday (Aug. 30). Chang'e 2 had left lunar orbit in early June to head for deeper space.<br /> China is now the world's third nation or agency to put a probe in L2, one of five spots in near-Earth space that serve as a sort of parking lot for spacecraft to hover without being pulled toward any planetary body. NASA and the European Space Agency have also accomplished the feat.<br /> <br /> Officials from China's State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defence (SASTIND) said that <a href="http://www.space.com/11971-china-moon-probe-begins-deep-space-exploration.html">Chang'e 2</a> will carry out exploration activities around L2 over the coming year, Xinhua reported. SASTIND also plans to launch two "measure and control stations" into outer space by the end of 2012, and Chang'e 2 will be used to test the stations' functionality at that time.<br /> Chang'e 2 launched on Oct. 1, 2010, and arrived in lunar orbit five days later. The probe is the second step in China's three-phase moon exploration program, which includes a series of unmanned missions to explore the lunar surface. <div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> Many common signs of aging, such as shaking hands, stooped posture and walking slower, may be due to tiny blocked vessels in the brain that can't be detected by current technology. <br /> <div id="seealso"> <hr /> </div> In a study reported in <i>Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association, </i>researchers examined brain autopsies of older people and found:<br /> <ul> <li>Microscopic lesions or infarcts -- too small to be detected using brain imaging -- were in 30 percent of the brains of people who had no diagnosed brain disease or stroke.</li> <li>Those who had the most trouble walking had multiple brain lesions.</li> <li>Two-thirds of the people had at least one blood vessel abnormality, suggesting a possible link between the blocked vessels and the familiar signs of aging.</li> </ul> "This is very surprising," said Aron S. Buchman, M.D., lead author of the study and associate professor of neurological sciences at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. "There is a very big public health consequence because we're not capturing this 30 percent who have undiagnosed small vessel disease that is not picked up by current technology. How would you even get them on your radar? We need additional tools in our toolkit."<br /> In 1994, the researchers began conducting annual exams of 1,100 older nuns and priests for signs of aging. The participants also donated their brains for examination after death. This study provides results on the first 418 brain autopsies (61 percent women, average 88 years old at death).<br /> Although Parkinson's disease occurs in only 5 percent of older people, at least half of people 85 and older have mild symptoms associated with the disease.<br /> Before the study, researchers believed that something more common, such as microscopic blocked vessels, might be causing the physical decline. The study's autopsies found the small lesions could only be seen under a microscope after participants died.<br /> The lesions couldn't be detected by current scans.<br /> During the annual exams of the nuns and priests, researchers used the motor skills portion of a Parkinson's disease survey to assess their physical abilities. Researchers observed and rated the participants':<br /> <ul> <li>Balance</li> <li>Ability to maintain posture</li> <li>Walking speed</li> <li>Ability to get in and out of chairs</li> <li>Ability to make turns when walking</li> <li>Sense of dizziness</li> </ul> "Often the mild motor symptoms are considered an expected part of aging," said Buchman, who is also a member of the Rush Alzheimer's Disease Center. "We shouldn't accept this as normal aging. We should try to fix it and understand it.<br /> If there is an underlying cause, we can intervene and perhaps lessen the impact."<br /> Co-authors are Sue E. As more anger grew against American capitalists, May 1 became the date for International Workers' Day, especially in socialistic countries.</span></span></div><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"> </span></span><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: black;">Another turning point in the international workers revolution came in 1891 when Pope Leo III published his “Rerum Novarum” encyclical, in which he laid out the Church's new position "On the Condition of the Working Classes."</span></span></div><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"> </span></span><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: black;">Pope Leo called for workers to be paid a living wage, work fewer hours and have the right to organize. He wanted to ban or limit child labor and said the state had the duty to regulate labor conditions.</span></span></div><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"> </span></span><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: black;">Governments did eventually act – even in the non-papist U.S. of A.</span></span></div><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"> </span></span><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: black;">The Progressive Movement in this country acted to ban child labor, set a reasonable work week and passed most of our anti-monopoly laws.</span></span></div><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"> </span></span><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: black;">McGuire again led the parade, focusing on expanding unionism and branding it forever as corrupt. He founded the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America and was an early officer in the AFL. He was charged with embezzling $10,000 from the carpenters' union in 1901 and voted out of office the next year. Many of his long-term supporters said the charges were trumped up.</span><span style="color: black;"> </span><span style="color: black;"></span></span></div><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"> </span></span><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: black;">He died in 1906 of complications caused by his chronic alcoholism.</span></span></div><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"> </span></span><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: black;">But don't think the international labor revolution died with these early pioneers.
